Familiar with the country from having helped to set up two orphanages in the 1970's, Mimi moved to Haiti in 1982 to begin training the extremely talented Haitian artists to transform her designs into desirable decorative art for the world market. Hundreds of lives have been helped through this endeavor.
Haiti is famous for recycling empty 55-gallon steel drums into exotic and vibrant forms of folk art. The drum is cleaned by filling it with dried banana or sugar cane leaves and setting this on fire to rid it of impurities.

It is then cut open and flattened. The design is drawn on to the metal and then the true artwork begins with the artisan using a primitive chisel and mallet to skillfully and painstakingly cut out the image. The final piece is then buffed and painted in lovely Caribbean colors. They are then coated with varnish to protect them from the elements. Each piece is handcrafted and hammered out to create a unique dimensional wall hanging. Enjoy! |
